A man arrested Monday in California after fatally shooting a 5-day-old boy in his home was a convicted felon, authorities said.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said deputies responded to a home in the 8400 block of Stonyhurst Drive in Los Angeles’ South Bay about 2:45 a.m.
Monday for a report of a shooting.
The son was found unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene, according to a sheriff’s statement.
Detectives found a .40-caliber pistol inside the home, a revolver in the bedroom, and a shotgun and three .22-caliber rounds in the living room, the statement said.
The child’s father, whose name has not been released, is cooperating with investigators, the sheriff’s department said.
Investigators say the father, identified as David J. Darnell, 48, has been charged with felony murder.
A warrant was issued for his arrest and a news conference is scheduled for Tuesday.
A witness told deputies that a man who lived at the home earlier this month fired the .40 handgun at the 5-month-old’s face, according the statement.
The father was arrested in the early morning hours Monday, the Sheriff’s department added.
Detectics also said the father told them that the child had been shot by a .22 bullet, but did not provide further details.
Detectors also found a shotgun in the kitchen and two .22 shells in the upstairs bedroom, the department said, adding that it did not have an owner listed.
The home is on a residential street with no streetlights, and the area is generally quiet, according a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman.
